Article: TWO-LANE TURNPIKE BAN WINS APPROVAL IN SENATE

The bill to outlaw two-lane turnpikes in Oklahoma which began its life as a measure to allow a lease-purchase of the Ada-Sulphur turnpike on Thursday passed the Oklahoma Senate 35-8 with no debate.

House Bill 1044, as a committee substitute, must again be approved by the House of Representatives.

The bill, a shadow of its former self, was introduced by House Speaker Jim Barker to allow the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to lease the two-lane southern turnpike from the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority for up to $500,000 year.

The arrangement would prevent toll booths from being put on the turnpike.
