Like so many Oklahomans, I knew almost nothing about betting on
horses when Remington Park was opened a year ago.
My total experience amounted to a few visits to Blue Ribbon
Downs, Louisiana Downs, Midway Downs and Will Rogers Downs. I tried
betting on hunches that stemmed from my hotel room number, horses
with familiar names, horses that looked anxious to run, jockeys and
owners I had heard about, and tips I overheard at the track.
You can imagine how that went. I figured on spending about $20
at the betting window and usually did. I tried betting across the
board or on two or three horses in a race. A lucky win now and then
rarely covered my losses.
