U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb (D) and Republican rival George Allen
sprinted the length and breadth of Virginia today, mobilizing party
activists for a close election Tuesday that now hinges on how well
the state's two political titans can turn out their voters,
especially in the pivotal Washington suburbs.
The two former governors crisscrossed the Old Dominion amid the
costliest, most elaborate turnout drives that Virginia has ever seen,
Allen focusing on Fairfax County's exuberant GOP and Robb stirring
rural Democrats in far Southwest Virginia and African Americans in
Hampton Roads.
