Most countries don't celebrate their independence with a nationwide bingo game and crossbow tournament. But then again, most countries aren't like San Marino.

San Marino is one of the world's smallest nations. It's a speck on the east coast of Italy, only 23.5 square miles in size--or just one- third the size of Washington, D.C. There is no airport, no train station, no harbor. The country is completely surrounded by Italy, and only 26,732 people live there.

One of them is Alice Fedele, a 12-year-old student at San Marino's 3rd Middle School. Says Alice: "San Marino is strange because it is different. Everything's more reduced. The roads are different, smaller."
