Columbia Hospital for Women has delivered more than 250,000 babies
since it opened more than a century ago and it became a sanctuary for
the hopes of generation after generation of city families.
Built in the District to accommodate wives and widows of Civil War
veterans, Columbia was for decades the region's premier maternity
hospital. But in recent years it has faced growing competition far
from the city center.
Now, it is trying to withstand an aggressive move by Sibley
Memorial Hospital, which lured away Columbia's two largest groups of
obstetricians with promises of expanded facilities and assistance in
paying the doctors' malpractice premiums. That has renewed persistent
