Article: AUGUST AUTO SALES UP FOR YEAR, DOWN FOR MONTH

A strong demand for used cars and light-duty trucks pushed retail sales up slightly in August from a year-earlier period for metropolitan area auto dealers.

However, this demand was not as strong in August as it was in July, so total sales dropped from the previous month, according to figures released Wednesday by the Metropolitan Auto Dealers Association.

There were 7,726 new and used cars and light-duty trucks, foreign and domestic, sold by the 51 members of the association last month. This was up 0.8 percent from the 7,662 sold in August 1989, but down 5.6 percent from the 8,190 sold in July, the figures show.
