N.Y. Times News Service CHICAGO _ Demolition of the last
remaining abandoned buildings in the Stockyards is under way, the
culmination of a 30-year effort to convert what was once the hub of
the nation's meat-packing industry into an industrial park.
In April, a wrecking ball leveled two packing houses on
property now owned by the city, which acquired it in lieu of unpaid
property taxes. The city hopes to sell the land to a manufacturer.
The transformation of the yards has been slow but steady.
Manufacturers, attracted by city and state tax incentives and
federal grant programs, are replacing the dozens of livestock pens,
slaughterhouses and packing plants that 40 years ago filled this ...
