Article: Chicago Takes Wrecking Ball to Last Building in Stockyard

N.Y. Times News Service CHICAGO _ Demolition of the last remaining abandoned buildings in the Stockyards is under way, the culmination of a 30-year effort to convert what was once the hub of the nation's meat-packing industry into an industrial park.

In April, a wrecking ball leveled two packing houses on property now owned by the city, which acquired it in lieu of unpaid property taxes. The city hopes to sell the land to a manufacturer.

The transformation of the yards has been slow but steady.
