Two days ago, for the 19th year, the Ford's Theatre curtain rose on "A Christmas Carol." Nineteen years of little Tim bleating, Scrooge snarling and mufflered Victorian extras blowing on their hands to pretend it's Brrrr! Cold!

The damn show won't die. It won't go on the road and get lost on the way back to 10th Street NW. The tired old sets have not yet been incinerated by theater grouches driven mad by the Lazarus-like resurrection of this moldy old chestnut every ding-dong year. Chestnuts! I forgot the chestnut vendors onstage in the first act. Lives there yet a cliche that this production has not clasped to its dusty bosom?
