The president arrived at the Executive Mansion yesterday, after a
long trip to Washington and in the midst of a bruising political
campaign.
Two hundred years ago on Nov. 1, President John Adams's battered
coach, drawn by a team of aging horses, pulled up to the muddy south
entrance of the mansion after 17 days on the road from his
Massachusetts farm. As first resident, Adams moved into the
unfinished building. Adams, who was in a tight race with challenger
Thomas Jefferson, wondered how long he would be living in the large
new house on Pennsylvania Avenue.
To mark the 200th anniversary of the event and to begin a month-
long celebration of the building, Adams's arrival at what became
