Article: Senate Overwhelmingly Backs Juvenile Justice Reform Plan

The Oklahoma Senate, ignoring criticism of Gov. David Walters, voted overwhelmingly Monday for a $56 million juvenile justice reform package.

The plan, sponsored by House leaders, was approved on a 41-5 vote. It returns to the House for consideration of Senate amendments and will be hammered into its final form in a House-Senate conference committee.

Sen. Ted Fisher, D-Sapulpa, is the principal Senate author of House Bill 2640, which as written would be financed by an income tax increase. The principal House author is Rep. Loyd Benson, D-Frederick.

The plan would be submitted to a vote of the people.
