Article: Cast, Story Line Make Lyric's `Grand Hotel' Delight to Watch

"Grand Hotel, the Musical" opened with great flourish Tuesday night at Lyric Theatre, startling the audience with its resonance, hustle and bustle. The musical is based on Vicki Baum's novel about the happenings at a luxury hotel in Berlin in 1928, and four subplots keep the audience alert.

The militaristic mood of Germany is echoed in the posturing of the hotel staff and their opening number, which almost seemed a military march set to music. Even the stiff little gilt chairs were moved about as a soldier might move a rifle.
