With his '80s band the Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn was briefly the
most appealing Lou Reed imitator around. Long before that group
dissolved, however, Wynn shifted to a less venturesome sort of folk-
rock. That's the style to which he has devoted himself in the '90s
too, with a string of solo albums that are mostly as workmanlike as
his latest one, "My Midnight." The album features such estimable
players as Come's Chris Brokaw and Pere Ubu's Tony Maimone, but
they're no substitute for guitarist Karl Precoda, Wynn's foil during
his most interesting period.
Bob Dylan is Wynn's principal model for such songs as "The Mask of
