Article: Earth Day Tug-of-war Develops Over Corporate Sponsorships

WASHINGTON _ It would be a green extravaganza of Super Bowl dimensions, complete with Roman numerals, a pop music festival, a trade exposition, a big rally and a coast-to-coast consciousness-raising: Earth Day.

Next year is the 25th anniversary of the rallies that first cropped up on April 22, 1970, and everybody wants a piece of the action, including the Clinton administration, the environmental movement and even big business.

As a result, its organizers have been struggling with questions about the proper role for corporate financing of an event that, back in the environmental movement's salad days, had a distinctly populist flavor.
