The La Plata Town Council likely will approve a moratorium on new
town houses and apartments at its next meeting, Mayor William F.
Eckman said Friday.
The move comes even though few such dwellings are slated to be
built soon in the town of about 6,500 people, Eckman said. It
follows widespread criticism of the town's preliminary approval of a
676-unit housing project on La Plata's eastern edge that would rank
among the largest subdivisions in the Charles County seat.
Citing tension over the development being planned by her husband,
H.A. Turner IV, council member Merle K. Turner has decided not to run
for reelection in the May 4 municipal elections. Turner, 50, has
served on the Town Council ...
