KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ As part of a widespread surge in Midwest
employment, the job growth rate in the Kansas City area has
soared to the fourth highest in the nation, a survey shows.
The metropolitan area added 38,500 jobs in February, a 4.73
percent increase to 852,900, according to the latest monthly
survey by Arizona State University.
The yearly addition of jobs is the equivalent of adding four
times the workforce of Sprint Corp., the city's largest private
employer.
Kansas City is not an island of good fortune but part of a
rebounding region, once dismissed as "The Rust Belt" because of
its declining steel mills and lagging auto factories.
