Article: Sales of New Homes Increase 6.1 Percent in June

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Sales of new homes rose 6.1 percent in June to the highest level in a year and a half.

Helped by falling mortgage rates, sales increased in every region of the country, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.

The figures are the latest sign the economy bottomed out in the spring and has begun a modest recovery.

The Commerce Department said sales of new single-family homes totaled 728,000 at a seasonally adjusted annual rate in June, largest since a 823,000 rate in December 1993.

In May, new home sales shot up 12.5 percent, totaling a revised 686,000.
