Article: Benson proves a different kind of speaker

Loyd Benson is his own man and he's letting everyone know it, especially Gov. Frank Keating.

The new Democratic House speaker oozes mistrust of the Republican governor as he looks toward his role in the 1997 Oklahoma Legislature, which reconvenes Feb. 3.

Benson, D-Frederick, has made it clear that Keating has a way to go to ease the sore spots left by a vitriolic campaign season. While vowing to cooperate to avoid gridlock, Benson also said recent events "make it difficult for me to be as open and responsive as I would like to be.
