Article: Analysts doubt GM's prospects on reaching market share goal

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp.'s U.S. market share sank again last month, causing some analysts to question whether GM can reverse the trend and hit its year-end goal of capturing 32 percent of the car and truck market.

GM's share fell from 31.7 percent in June 1996 to 28.4 percent last month, the lowest level since the 1920s, according to Autodata Corp., an auto industry consultant.

While strikes by union workers at GM two plants are partly to blame, the performance was worse than many analysts expected.
