Article: GM market share hits highest marks since 1995

DETROIT -- General Motors' U.S. vehicle market share rebounded in September to its highest level since December 1995, aided by a shortage of Japanese rivals' cars in a performance that will be tough to repeat.

The largest U.S. automaker's share jumped to 33.4 percent from 30.9 percent in September 1996. GM was the only Detroit carmaker to gain as industrywide sales fell 3.8 percent.

September's monthly gain was the automaker's third in a row. Yet it's too early for the automaker to declare victory, analysts said.
