NEW YORK (AP) -- National Geographic is teaming up with Fox and
NBC to expand its overseas TV operations and lay the groundwork for a
cable network in the United States to compete with popular nature
channels like Discovery.
It's not clear when the U.S. channel might be launched, but the
joint venture announced Wednesday gives National Geographic,
publisher of the venerable wildlife and exploration magazine, the
backing of two experienced players in the American television market.
For Fox and NBC, the arrangement provides a well-known brand name
to ensure broad appeal overseas, where the success of programs can
vary widely from country to country.
