HUGO (AP) -- Choctaw County is still one of the poorest counties
in Oklahoma, but local leaders say the southeastern region has come a
far way from the depths of poverty it reached in the past.
About 35 percent of Choctaw County residents live below the
poverty level, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The median household income is a state-worst $17,014, according to
1996 figures, and about 47 percent of the area's children live in
poverty.
"History will show that our area has always lagged behind the
national power curve," said Jack Jackson of the Little Dixie
Community Action Agency in Choctaw County. "But all of the good
things happening nationwide are beginning to spill into our area."
