Oscar De La Hoya always has been humble. He routinely has
deflected questions about his ultimate potential, his place in
boxing, his greatness.
No more.
"Now," De La Hoya said early this morning, "I am the best pound-
for-pound fighter in the world."
An hour before this declaration, De La Hoya not only had to lift
himself from the canvas, but also had to overcome a deficit on the
judges' cards in the final three rounds to retain his WBC
welterweight title with a 12-round, split decision over Ike Quartey
Saturday night at Thomas & Mack Center.
