A dispute broke out between David Feder, a 15-year veteran of the
restaurant industry who now serves as a food and nutrition editor at
Better Homes and Gardens, and Anne Munoz-Furlong, the chief executive
officer of the Alexandria-based Food Allergy Network. The setting
was a Tufts University conference that was underwritten by the Peanut
Institute, a trade group based in Albany, Ga.
Feder, a dietitian, was saying that when a person with a life-
threatening food allergy goes to a restaurant, the restaurant can't
be responsible for the patron's safety. It's up to the individual,
he commented, to keep himself protected.
