Six months after Osama bin Laden allegedly masterminded the truck
bombing of two U.S. embassies in east Africa, senior U.S. officials
say they have disrupted planned operations by his followers and
stayed one step ahead of new threats through aggressive intelligence-
gathering and cooperation with foreign authorities.
U.S. officials believe bin Laden remains in Afghanistan despite a
report four days ago by a spokesman for the ruling Taliban government
that bin Laden had "disappeared." The report came 10 days after
Assistant Secretary of State Karl F. Inderfurth met with Taliban
leaders and demanded that they expel the exiled Saudi millionaire so
that he can stand trial in the United States.
