Labor Day will provide many American workers an extra-long
weekend.
The holiday was a creation of the labor movement more than 100
years ago. The origin is debatable -- there are still questions today
about who founded the holiday or if it can even be credited to one
person.
The first Labor Day celebrations are said to have been in New York
in the early 1880s. The holiday spread with the labor movement.
By the mid-1880s, some municipal ordinances had been passed
recognizing Labor Day and the movement started pushing for state
legislation.
Oregon became the first state to recognize Labor Day, passing a
