DETROIT (AP) -- Ford said for the first time Wednesday that the
furor over the Firestone tire recall has driven down sales of its
sports utility vehicle Explorers, with October figures down 16 per
cent from last year.
Ford sold 29,611 Explorers, a drop of 5,825 from October 1999.The
latest figures include the Explorer Sport Trac, a four-door pickup
that is new this year. It accounted for 17 percent of sales in
October.
The decline is "purely the recall," said Art Spinella, an industry
analyst with CNW Marketing/Research in Bandon, Ore. "The real problem
