Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger moved quickly Monday to break the
legal logjam that has halted executions in California, ordering
state officials to overhaul their approach to lethal injections to
satisfy the concerns of a federal judge.
But it is unclear whether the governor's call for reforms will be
enough to end the court fight over lethal injection and reopen a
state execution chamber that has been shut down since February.
"I am committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure that the
lethal injection process is constitutional so that the will of the
people is followed and the death penalty is maintained in
California," the governor said.
