SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Zito is the parading iconoclast in the
Haight. He's the social libertarian in the Castro. He's the yuppie
strolling the Marina district, which he once called home.
But Zito also gets the old-schoolers of the Sunset, the urban
hipsters in the Mission and perhaps even the homeless dotting the
sidewalks and doorways of Union Square.
Certainly, though, as the newest San Francisco Giant, having
signed a contract worth $126 million, Zito breathes the same
rarefied air as the top-floor fat cats in the Financial District.
From his slacker attire to his quirky attitude to the
complexities of his character, Zito belongs here, in San Francisco,
a city that belies its surface ...
