MEATBALLS. YOU'VE GOTTA love 'em. These tasty treats can be
served as an appetizer, snack, main course, or atop a mound of
pasta. They can be fried, baked, or simmered in sauce.
They range from almost tennis ball size, in the hearty sandwiches
found in Italian restaurants, to the 1/4-inch diameter morsels my
grandma used hundreds of in place of a meaty sauce for her lasagna.
Some are just beef. Others contain pork, veal, turkey, lamb, or
other meats. Even meatless meatballs have become popular.
Just about every major country has a meatball. Besides the well-
known Italian and Swedish varieties, there are Turkish, Greek,
Chinese, Mexican, South African, and Brazilian meatballs -- to name
