Article: INVESTMENT TRENDS; Follow the good bank managers; Industry watchers say people are a big part of equation

People make the world go 'round, and that's particularly true in the banking industry, say two local investment managers who run a hedge fund that buys only bank stocks.

Of course, other things matter in terms of running a good bank, said Jon Bruss and Robert Ollech.

A good business model and a fast-growing market are critical to a bank's success. But good managers address that by figuring out the best ways to expand their businesses and hiring employees who are smarter than they are, they say.

"The three most important things are management, management and management," said Bruss, principal, chief executive officer and portfolio manager at Fortress Partners Capital Management Ltd., Hartland.
