Some veterans groups probably view Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's
decision to drop plans to create a biomedical and high-tech business
park and veterans housing on the grounds of the Zablocki Veterans
Affairs Medical Center as a victory.
Unfortunately, we fear the intense opposition from some veterans
groups that convinced a reluctant Barrett to pull the city's plans
could hurt both veterans and the community as a whole.
We shared Barrett's vision that this would be an ideal way to
grow the economy and create good jobs while addressing the critical
need to better serve and honor veterans by restoring historic
buildings that had fallen into disrepair.
