Erik Bedard trudged into the Baltimore Orioles clubhouse on
Friday morning with droopy, sleepy eyes and pillow creases on his
face. Not much excites Bedard. On the day he made his spring debut,
beginning what likely will be the most important season of his young
career, Bedard was half asleep.
After throwing two perfect innings in Friday's 3-0 victory over
the Florida Marlins -- "Looked pretty professional to me," Manager
Sam Perlozzo gushed -- Bedard seemed mostly indifferent. Asked
what it would mean to start on Opening Day, all but a certainty
though the Orioles decline to confirm it, Bedard calmly said: "It
would be fun. But it doesn't really mean anything after the season
starts."
