They're supposed to be producing grand opera, not soap opera.
Over the past three years, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden--one
of Britain's great cultural institutions--has been spiraling into
chaos. It has been pitiful to watch.
For the moment, the company is homeless, its venerable theater
shuttered for refurbishment. Worse, it went through a string of
inept, bickering administrations, whose every flaw was shouted by the
British press. It was investigated by the House of Commons.
Bankruptcy was a frighteningly real scenario. The 1999-2000 season
had been canceled altogether. It took an American crisis management
