One of the newest federal job titles, "community builder,"
continues to generate passion within the Department of Housing and
Urban Development.
HUD Secretary Andrew M. Cuomo calls community builders HUD's new
urban Peace Corps. About 500 of them are performing two- to three-
year stints with impressive results, according to HUD. But they have
not always slipped harmoniously into their visible, $53,000 to
$105,000-a-year positions alongside longtime HUD employees steeped in
the intricacies of the department's complex programs.
A few Republicans have been suspicious that the community builders
would be Democratic Party builders in disguise, although HUD says
this is a completely unwarranted ...
