PRESCRIPTION-ONLY slimming pills could soon be available direct
from pharma cies
following approval of Glaxo- SmithKline's orlistat for overthe-
counter sales in the US. An application for de-restriction here in
the UK is likely to be met with a similarly favourable response,
meaning the drug could be available without prescription as soon as
the end of next year. It's a move that's likely to be welcomed by
most doctors.
Orlistat (already known as Xenical) works by interfering with the
absorption of fat in the diet. Around a third of the fat content of
a meal that would otherwise have been absorbed passes straight
through the bowel, significantly reducing the person's calorie
intake.
