Article: Gatwick Express rail service spared the axe ; BUSINESS

The loss-making Gatwick Express is to be spared the axe under a deal which will see the service integrated into the much bigger Southern franchise and an extra 12,000 seats added to trains.

The decision, announced yesterday by the Department for Transport, means that there will continue to be a dedicated, non- stop service every 15 minutes between the airport and central London.

It marks a victory for Gatwick's owner, BAA, which had argued that the airport would be placed at a serious disadvantage if it lost its high-speed connection with the capital. The alternative had been to scrap the service and increase the number of commuter trains on the busy London-Brighton line.
