New coach at Cal State East Bay happy to be back in California

AFTER SPENDING six years on the East Coast, Sacramento native Barbara Pierce was ready to come back to California.

"I talked to the head coach at Penn State the other day, and she said it was like 30 degrees and snowing," said Pierce, who was a shortstop for the Nittany Lions before graduating in 2004.

Before taking the head coaching position this season at Cal State East Bay, she spent the past two years as an assistant at St. Lawrence University in New York, an NCAA Division III school.
