Reed Elsevier was forced to deflect criticism from its shareholders over its involvement in the organisation of trade fairs for the arms industry after a protest was staged outside the publisher's annual general meeting.

Reed's core business is publishing medical, scientific and legal journals but the company has an exhibitions business that organises arms fairs around the world. Earlier this year, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust sold [pound]2m-worth of shares after Reed refused to sever its ties with the arms industry.
