Article: Funding study backed for Park East Square; Council panel urges analysis of $9.5 million in city financing

Supporters of additional city financing to spur development in Milwaukee's Park East area won a preliminary round Tuesday - while also shifting some power from Mayor Tom Barrett's administration to the Common Council.

The council's Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee voted 5-0 to require Barrett's Department of City Development to analyze possible city financial assistance for a controversial development proposal called Park East Square. The full council will consider the committee's recommendation at its May 8 meeting.

It would apparently mark the first time the council has forced the department to conduct an in-depth analysis of city financing for a proposed development.
