Conversations in an unfamiliar language volley back and forth in
the children's play "New Kid," but Imagination Stage audiences
needn't worry that they've missed a prerequisite Berlitz course.
Playwright Dennis Foon has simply hit on a clever linguistic
strategy for plunging theatergoers into the world of his hero Nick,
a Vietnamese boy whose family immigrates to America.
Not knowing the language, Nick (Brian Lee Huynh) finds himself at
a verbal disadvantage at his new school, where his classmates --
particularly a hyperactive duo named Mug and Mench (Dan Crane and
Tiernan Madorno) -- initially ostracize and mock him. Foon has
written Mug and Mench's dialogue in a colorful gibberish ...
