Law favors gambler over grad

Like murder or treason, failure to repay a student loan is an offense with no statute of limitations.

That is virtually unheard of in civil or criminal law, experts say.

"It's extraordinary," said Deanne Loonin, staff attorney for the National Consumer Law Center in Boston and author of "No Way Out," a report on student lending laws.

Other than child support, taxes and student loans, very few debts can be pursued for collection indefinitely, experts said.

What's more, since changes in the law in 1998, declaring bankruptcy will not free one from the debt. That goes for government- backed student loans and, since 2005, private student loans as well.
