Char Powers enjoys surrounding herself with fascinating people
and whimsical objects.
Combine the two with a splash of genuine hospitality, and she has
the makings for a great party.
Just ask anyone who has been a guest at her annual May Day party,
which she hosted Tuesday and has hosted every May 1 for the past 42
years. It's a rite of seasonal passage that spills into outdoor
spaces, each one blooming and decorated for the occasion, including
a summer snow crab tree that serves as a May Pole with alternating
pink and blue streamers floating from the branches.
Dressed in a vintage white dress, Powers welcomes each guest to
