SAN FRANCISCO -- His eyeglasses were pushed up on his head,
immobile, unlike the hats which used to fly off when Willie Mays
chased down a fly ball.
He is nibbling from a huge slab of birthday cake. His birthday
cake.
Seventy-seven today for Willie, for the "Say Hey Kid," who is
very much a man, for the individual voted the second best player of
the 20th century, behind Babe Ruth.
"There have been only two geniuses in the world," the actress
Tallulah Bankhead once said, "Willie Mays and Willie Shakespeare.
But darling, I think you'd better put Shakespeare first."
