The Big East Conference will consider this week whether to expand
to 14 members, a decision that could have a direct impact on Virginia
Tech, a league member only in football.
Virginia Tech, which competes in all sports but football in the
Atlantic 10 Conference, has long desired full membership in the Big
East, whose league officials and school representatives meet this
week in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., to consider the issue.
"They're a logical 14th team, but this is not being done from a
Virginia Tech perspective," Big East senior associate commissioner
Tom McElroy said Friday. "Virginia Tech is not on the agenda. Going
to 14 teams and strategic planning is {what's} on the agenda."
