Dan O'Brien of the United States, overcoming four years of
supreme frustration, won the decathlon at the Summer Olympics.
As the final events transpired, network TV announcers recalled
great decathlon gold-medalists from across the years.
Jim Thorpe, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner, Bob Mathias. . .
It sounded like a complete list, but they did leave out one name.
Nobody noticed at the time, and most viewers around the nation and
the world certainly never knew the difference.
