We know Michelangelo created a snow sculpture for Piero de Medici
after a rare snowstorm in Florence. But before that, the origins of
snow sculpture are lost in the mists of time. Odds are that artists
have been piling or rolling or carving snow for thousands of years.
Some years it seems as if it snows as rarely here as it does in
Florence, but in fact it's normal to get one or two big storms a
year. And a major storm opens up the world of snow art. The best
months for snow sculpture in Colorado Springs can be March and April -
when the snowfall is heaviest and the snow is wetter, making it
easier to pack.
