Colleen Berkompas has a fear of Interstate 25.
"I'm taking my life in my hands every time I go out there," said
the 32-year-old Air Force Academy resident. "We go to Denver and to
the outlet stores, but we have to consciously think about, 'Is it
worth it to get on the freeway?'"
It's a good bet she's not the only one who dreads merging onto
the interstate, where the daily flood of vehicles makes for a nerve-
racking commute. Dramatic wrecks frequently back up traffic for
miles, and an unusual string of fatal crashes already has made 2000
the interstate's deadliest year in El Paso County.
Put it all together, and it's easy to believe that:
Most fatal crashes happen on Interstate 25.
