INDIANAPOLIS - Three of the four swimmers holding spots of honor at the Olympic swim trials Wednesday night - first or second in the two races completed - were bright-eyed, overwhelmed and undeniably young. They cried tears of innocence, of being handed an Olympic berth like being handed a puppy at Christmas.

Chad Carvin was the fourth, holding that all-important second place in the 400-meter freestyle, and his tears were entirely different. They were joyful but knowing and experienced tears, that came from realizing how far he'd come.
