DENVER - Add this to the only-at-Coors Field file: San Diego
Padres starter Woody Williams had given up nine runs in five innings,
had just served up a three-run homer to Colorado's Ron Gant with only
one out and Williams was due to hit second in the top of the sixth.
Naturally, the Padres had no one warming up in the bullpen.
And naturally, Williams closed out the inning, bombed a double to
left in his ensuing at-bat and led a five-run rally that left him as
the improbable winning pitcher Saturday afternoon in a 14-10 defeat
of the Rockies.
"Just a typical game here," said San Diego manager Bruce Bochy,
shaking his head. "I'll say this for Woody, he really battled."
