Come May 26, the days of kids being content just splashing around a public pool in Colorado Springs will be gone.

Soon they will be able to pass days shooting water guns, swimming against the current in a constructed channel and climbing on a floating animal structure - courtesy of the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

This is the new style of public pool: more like a water park than a lap pool.

After seeing residents go elsewhere to enjoy such amusements for years, city leaders decided it was time for the Springs to have three water parks of its own.

But even as officials eagerly await the opening of the aquatic centers, they are distressed by what will not be at the sites - ...
